Overview
Rivers provide clean drinking water for human use and irrigation for agriculture, they are home to many organisms and their power helps us to produce energy. Nevertheless, they are also vulnerable ecosystems affected by conflicting human aims and lacking appropriate protection. The project SPARE aimed at sharing, adapting and capitalising strategic planning and river management experiences across different regions and governance levels. It contributed to a further harmonisation of human use requirements and protection needs. Nine project partners showed how strategic approaches for the protection and management of rivers could be improved across administrative and disciplinary borders. The project raised awareness about the multiple services provided by Alpine rivers, as well as about their vulnerability.
