One aspect of this education that deserves special attention is the conservation of alpine wetlands, which are vital ecosystems in the Alpine region. In this text, we will explore the significance of environmental education, particularly in the context of Alpine wetlands, and highlight two events within the Interreg Alpine Space project I-SWAMP that underscore its importance.
The Role of Environmental Education

Schools are at the forefront of this effort, as they provide a structured platform to introduce students to the wonders of nature and the challenges it faces.
Alpine Wetlands: A Unique Ecosystem
Alpine wetlands are a treasure trove of biodiversity and ecological services. These delicate ecosystems include swamps, bogs, and marshes, and they are essential for maintaining the health of the Alpine region. They serve as natural water filters, regulate local climate, and provide habitat for numerous plant and animal species, some of which are endangered. Moreover, Alpine wetlands act as carbon sinks, helping combat climate change.
Seminar for Alpine Associations and Hut Managers
On the 24th of September 2023, a seminar was organized by project partners IRSNC and EGTC Geopark Karawanken/Karavanke. This seminar targeted Alpine associations and hut managers and took place at the picturesque Smrekovec Alpine hut. The primary objective was to raise awareness about the I-SWAMP project and its activities.
The seminar began with a presentation of the project’s goals, emphasizing the importance of preserving Alpine wetlands. Attendees learned about the ecological significance of these wetlands and how they are intrinsically linked to the well-being of the Alpine environment. It highlighted the critical role that hut managers and alpine associations play in protecting these natural treasures.
Workshops on Wetlands for the Mežica School
On the 29th of September 2023, on the Natural Science Day, another crucial event took place as part of the I-SWAMP project. IRSNC and EGTC Geopark Karawanken/Karavanke organized workshops on wetlands specifically for the Mežica school. This initiative aimed to bring environmental education directly to students, recognizing that young minds are the future stewards of our planet.
During these workshops, students had the opportunity to engage with hands-on activities, explore local wetlands, and learn about the unique flora and fauna that inhabit them. They gained a deeper understanding of the importance of wetlands in preserving biodiversity and supporting a healthy environment. Furthermore, they were encouraged to think critically about the role they can play in conserving these ecosystems.
