The Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation held two natural science days for the primary school of the Pohorski odred in Slovenska Bistrica on 3 and 4 October. The workshops took place in the Bistrica vintgar, where students could experience nature blindfolded through smell, touch and sound and from different perspectives. Our college Jurij presented project I-SWAMP and the value of wetlands.
The students also created a food web and learned how a wetland ecosystem is affected by climate change, extinction of species and invasive species. The food web workshop was created together with the project partners of the I-SWAMP project and is included in the didactic manual Wetlands – in nature boots, which will be published soon in 5 different languages.
The students also learned about the rock circle and were fascinated by the rare crystals. They were surprised to find that the economic importance of the rocks in the Bistriški vintgar was already known to the Romans, who mined marble here. The students spent an interesting and educational day in nature and learned why we want to preserve pristine wetlands.
